My first custom Dollfie Dream: Amami Haruka (Doll Profile #3)

Almost a year after I got Yoko, I decided to take a stab at doing a custom DD. I’m a pretty big fan of IdolM@ster, so when I saw the Cherry Milk doll outfit for Haruka, I decided that I wanted to have her made. Now, before anyone tries to call me out on the fact that Haruka already exists, I started down the path of my Haruka in 2010, 2 years before the Volks Haruka was released. I even wrote about my plans on July 16, 2010. Take that, Volks!

That being said, most of Haruka’s beginnings are pretty well documented with pictures, so I won’t go too much into that…

Part 1

Part 2

Finished!

What I’ll try to cover are some stories that happened after she was made…

Amami Haruka Dollfie project–Stage 2

Here we go! The UPS carrier dropped off a box on my doorstep today, I wonder where it’s from and what’s inside?

A close up on the shipping label should reveal some clues…

This could only mean one thing. Haruka’s head, body, and eyes have arrived! After getting my work done for the day, it was time to break the box open and check out the contents.

Amami Haruka project START!

After a tip from D.Ark about doll clothing seller Mimi Woo (on eBay and online), I started browsing for items for Yoko and Rin. Yoko needed some shoes to go with her new Candy Dots outfit and Rin is always in need of some new accessories. Sure enough, I saw an outfit so cute that I couldn’t resist. Over the next few months (maybe less?), I’ll be getting items together to create a custom Dollfie Dream based on IdolM@ster’s Amami Haruka!

03

The outfit I found was an exact match for what was used for the promotional material for the IdolM@ster SP PSP game, so I’ll be basing the doll on those pictures.

It’s a matter of scale

I’ve been taking a look at some of my figures lately and noticed something interesting. It seems that different manufacturers have different measurements of scale. Take a look at these photos…

While the differences between the 1/8 figures aren’t very noticeable (they seem to fit well together), the differences in height on the 1/6 figures is pretty significant. Some of the differences don’t even make sense. From left to right, the character heights are: Akira – 168cm, Onda Aka – unknown (but is fairly petite), Belldandy – 165cm, and Tohsaka Rin – 124cm (Fate/Zero), 159cm (Fate/Stay). No matter how you look at it, Akira should be tallest figure, followed by Belldandy, then Rin. Somehow, Rin is completely oversized and Belldandy is far too small.

But it doesn’t stop there. Even among the 1/8s, there is some discrepancy.

Here are two 1/8 scale figures of the same character (different manufacturers). If you were to pull the right figure upright, she would come out to be taller than the one on the left. All these differences make me wonder how the figures are made, and how they’re sized… Is it arbitrary?
