Anticipating a new arrival

Yesterday, I received an email from VolksUSA. In it was a tracking number. Dollfie Rin is on her way! Since I’m still new to the world of ball jointed dolls (BJDs), I still have quite a bit to learn about the things and accessories I’ll need to get. It turns out that the darker wigs have a tendency to stain, so I’ll need to get a cloth cap to put between them. Sadly, Volks is currently out of stock, so I’ll need to put that purchase on hold until one is available.

Tracking estimates delivery this Friday, so expect to see the first photos this weekend!

Selling off some goods

Since I’ve had some pretty hefty expenditures the past couple of weeks, I’ve decided to start a pile of things that I can part with and sell. Since I’ve failed in moving some things on the buy/sell email list at work, I’ve resorted to putting things up on Half.com. For a full list of things that I’ve parting with, check out my sales page. Please, help me pay for a Dollfie! 🙂

…and yes, I did get chosen in the last VolksUSA Dolfie lottery. Rin will be here in July! Just as a reminder, this is what she looks like:

The replacement figma

I came home today only to find an interesting bundle sitting in the middle of my driveway. It seems that the postman had put a package in a plastic bag (it was raining most of today) and dropped it off on my driveway. It was blocking my car from getting into the driveway, so I had to retrieve it before coming in. It seems that my two figmas had arrived from eBay! To get to them, I had to go through several layers of packaging. The outside was wrapped in thick paper, which was covered in tape. Inside was two cardboard boxes wrapped together with tape. Once I got the boxes open, there were layers of bubble wrap. Lastly, each figma box was wrapped in tissue paper. Talk about thorough! As a result, both arrived intact and in good condition.

I immediately set to opening them up, checking them out, and posing them in all sorts of interesting ways.

It’s a matter of scale

I’ve been taking a look at some of my figures lately and noticed something interesting. It seems that different manufacturers have different measurements of scale. Take a look at these photos…

While the differences between the 1/8 figures aren’t very noticeable (they seem to fit well together), the differences in height on the 1/6 figures is pretty significant. Some of the differences don’t even make sense. From left to right, the character heights are: Akira – 168cm, Onda Aka – unknown (but is fairly petite), Belldandy – 165cm, and Tohsaka Rin – 124cm (Fate/Zero), 159cm (Fate/Stay). No matter how you look at it, Akira should be tallest figure, followed by Belldandy, then Rin. Somehow, Rin is completely oversized and Belldandy is far too small.

But it doesn’t stop there. Even among the 1/8s, there is some discrepancy.

Here are two 1/8 scale figures of the same character (different manufacturers). If you were to pull the right figure upright, she would come out to be taller than the one on the left. All these differences make me wonder how the figures are made, and how they’re sized… Is it arbitrary?
